See how a promotion did

Kila measures each promotion's lift, against the same weekdays before it started, and the margin its sales made, so you can see which promotions pay for themselves.

A promotion is worth it when it brings in more than it gives away. Kila puts two figures next to each one: the Lift, how much more of its products sold on the days it ran, and the Margin those sales made.

  1. Open Sales › Promotions

The cards at the top add up every promotion: Running now, Uses (“Sales where a promotion applied”), Discount given and Sales influenced. Each row has the same for one promotion.

Promotions at Baraka Wines and Spirits: Happy hour at Baraka Wines and Wine Wednesday, each with its uses, discount given and sales influenced, the Lift column (2), green for the happy hour and red for Wine Wednesday, and the Margin column (3), below zero for the happy hour.Promotions at Baraka Wines and Spirits: Happy hour at Baraka Wines and Wine Wednesday, each with its uses, discount given and sales influenced, the Lift column (2), green for the happy hour and red for Wine Wednesday, and the Margin column (3), below zero for the happy hour.
  2. Read the Lift

“Lift compares sales of a promotion’s products, per day, with the same weekdays before it started.” Point at a lift to see the two figures behind it: KES a day during the promotion, against KES a day “on the same weekdays before”. Green is more than before, red is less.

  3. Read the Margin

The margin the promoted sales made, before VAT. Red means below zero: the promotion sold those products for less than they cost. At Baraka Wines and Spirits the beer happy hour more than doubled beer sales on its days, and made a margin below zero.

  4. Open the Promotion results report

Tap Promotion results report under How checkout picks, or find Promotion results under Money › Reports. “Each promotion running in the period: promoted sales and discount given, the margin they made, and the lift in sales of its products against the same weekdays before it started.”

  5. Check which promotions pay for themselves

Paying for themselves counts the promotions whose extra sales came to more than the discount they gave, such as 1 of 2. The table has, for each one, Promoted sales, Gross profit, Before, a day, During, a day and Extra sales.

The Promotion results report for 90 days: 2 promotions, promoted sales, discount given and Paying for themselves 1 of 2 (5), with a chart of the discount given and the extra sales of each. The Promotion results report for 90 days: 2 promotions, promoted sales, discount given and Paying for themselves 1 of 2 (5), with a chart of the discount given and the extra sales of each.

“Sales and margin are before VAT.” Choose the period and the branch at the top of the report, and print it or export it as CSV.

Good to know

The owner chooses how lift is measured, under Products › Margins, Price rules: Promotion lift compares with a number of weeks (“The same weekdays in the weeks before.”), and Lift shows after a number of days.

Next: pause a promotion that does not pay for itself: Set up a promotion.
