Your role

Plant manager

You run production across the sites. Plan what to make, keep the recipes and approve their changes, and watch output, yield and cost against the standard.

Kila describes the plant manager as running “production across the branches: plans and orders, recipes and their approval, costs and variances, machines and maintenance, quality and the shift log.” You see the costs the floor does not.

Kila opens Today at the site: the site, the day and the shift now, with Plan a run, Handover, Daily report and Line screen at the top. Below, the shift in figures (Runs, Made today, Scrapped, Stopped this shift, Held for QC, Checks due, Intake today), then each line with its runs.

  1. Read yesterday. Your home page starts with Yesterday at the plant: made against plan, the yield, the raw milk received and lost, and the minutes stopped.
  2. Plan. Check what to make and plan the runs, with their materials reserved.
  3. Keep the recipes. Change a recipe and it is in force at once; approve or reject the changes others make: Set up a recipe or parts list.
  4. Check the cost. Each closed run shows its cost a unit against the standard: Record output and close a production order. Over a period, Read production results and Cost variances.
  5. Report. The Daily report prints a day at a site. Levies works out the month’s KEBS standards levy and, when it is on, the Kenya Dairy Board levy: “Kila works them out; you file them on KRA iTax and with the Board.”
  • Plan, issue, close and cancel production orders, and choose the line a run is on.
  • Keep recipes and parts lists, and approve or reject the recipe changes others make.
  • See every cost: materials, labour and overheads, cost a unit against the standard, cost variances and levies.
  • Record and release quality checks, keep the HACCP records, and run machines and maintenance.

Needs a manager

  • The production settings: costing, planning, quality holds, scrap reasons and levies. The Settings tab on Production orders is for people who may change the business’s settings, such as the owner.
  • A stock adjustment above your limit waits for approval.

Why is there no Settings tab for me? The settings belong to the owner. See Choose how labour and overheads are costed.

A recipe change shows “change to approve”. What do I do? Open Versions on the recipe, read what changed and tap Approve or Reject: see Set up a recipe or parts list.

Why does a batch cost more than its standard? Open the order: the materials against the recipe, the yield and the scrap reasons show where it went. Cost variances splits it into price, usage, labour, overheads and yield.
