Your role

Pump attendant

Sell fuel on your own shift from your own phone, on the till or the forecourt device, at the pump price. A supervisor cashes you up from your meters.

A pump attendant sells fuel at the pumps on a shift of their own, and the meters of their nozzles say what they pumped. Kila describes the role: “Signs in to Kila to sell fuel on their own shift from the forecourt screen and records nozzle readings. No discounts, refunds or credit limits. Attendants who only use a PIN on the shared forecourt device need no role.”

So most attendants never sign in: they tap their name on the station’s forecourt tablet and type their PIN, as in Sell on the forecourt device. This page is for an attendant with a Kila account of their own, such as Kevin Mutua at Highway Petrol Station, who works from his phone.

Kila opens the till, with your shift open on it: its number is at the top. Your shift holds the nozzles of your islands, such as 1A Super, 1B Diesel, 2A Super and 2B Diesel, so the Fuel tab sells their fuels. The menu under your name has Shift and cash for your shift.

  1. Your shift opens with your nozzles. A supervisor opens it for you, or you open it yourself on the forecourt device.
  2. Sell. On the till, tap the Fuel tab and the fuel. Kila asks, such as Sell Diesel: choose By amount or By litres, type what the customer asks for and tap Add to cart, then Charge. By amount, Kila rounds the litres to three decimals and says what that comes to: “Litres are rounded to 3 decimals, so the amount is KES 1,000.08.”
  3. Drop cash on the forecourt device when it asks you to, and hand it to the cash office.
  4. Get cashed up. At the end of your shift a supervisor reads your meters and counts your cash with you: see Cash up an attendant.

The forecourt device is made for the pumps: it takes fleet fills by fleet card, and drops to the cash office. On your phone it needs no PIN, because you are signed in to Kila as yourself.

  1. In the menu under your name on the till, tap Clock in or out. Kila leaves the till for My time.
  2. In Kila’s menu, open Forecourt › Forecourt device. Keep the page as a bookmark on your phone: from the bookmark, Kila asks you to sign in and then opens the device.
  3. Tap your name: it shows On shift with your nozzles. Kila opens your shift straight away: “Signed in on this device. It locks by itself when nobody touches it.” Sell as on the station’s tablet, and tap Lock when you put the phone away.

  • Sell the fuel of your nozzles, by amount or by litres, at the pump price, on the till or the forecourt device.
  • Sell lubricants, shop goods and car washes on your shift: the till has their tabs, and the device has Car wash, lubricants and shop.
  • On the device, take cash, M-Pesa, card, a fleet account or vouchers, and drop cash to the cash office.

  • Discounts and refunds. Your limits are 0% and KES 0.00, so a discount or a refund is for someone else. Fuel sells at the pump price.
  • The end of your shift. A supervisor cashes you up with your closing meter readings. If you close the shift on the till yourself, Kila refuses until your nozzles have their closing readings.
Kila shows:

Shift not closed

Record the closing meter reading of 1A Super, 1B Diesel, 2A Super, 2B Diesel (Forecourt) before closing the shift.
Kevin Mutua submits a count of KES 1,000.00 to close his own shift on the till: Kila says Shift not closed and asks for the closing meter readings of his four nozzles first (4).Kevin Mutua submits a count of KES 1,000.00 to close his own shift on the till: Kila says Shift not closed and asks for the closing meter readings of his four nozzles first (4).

Why does KES 1,000 of diesel come to KES 1,000.08? Litres go to three decimals, so Kila rounds the litres and the amount follows them. Sell by litres when the customer wants a round number of litres.

Why can I not close my own shift? The meters decide the cash you should have, so a supervisor reads them with you at the cash-up and counts the cash.

Do I need my PIN on my phone? No. Signed in to Kila as yourself, your name opens your shift. On the station’s tablet, which is signed in as the forecourt device, you type your PIN like every attendant.
