Step by step
Open a shift
Before your first sale, choose your till and count the float in its drawer. Everything you take from then on is on your shift until you close it.
Steps differ for General businesses, professional firms and schools and training centres, gyms and studios and clinics and health services.
A shift is your time on one till. You open it by counting the float, the cash already in the drawer, so Kila knows what you started with. Until you do, the top of the till says No shift open and, at most businesses, the till does not sell.
Choose your till
When you have no shift open, the till asks you to Open your shift: “Choose your till and count the float in the drawer. Every shilling from here is on your shift until you close it.” Tap the till you are standing at. A till nobody is using says Free.
Count the float
Under Opening float, type how many notes of each value are in the drawer, from KES 1,000 down to KES 50, and the coins in shillings. Kila adds them up as Counted.
Steps 2 and 3 on one screen. Tap Open shift
The button shows the amount you counted, such as Open shift with KES 2,000.00. That amount is your opening float.
Start selling
Kila confirms the shift number and the till, such as SH-000235 open on Till 1 (by the door): “Float KES 2,000.00. You can start selling.” Your shift number now shows in green at the top of the till. Tap it whenever you want to see your shift, move cash or close it.
Good to know
The float you count is where Kila starts. At the close it expects the float, plus the cash you took, less the cash that left the drawer. See How shifts and cash-ups work.
For your business

The till sells without a shift. A new business of this kind starts with shifts optional: the top of the till shows Open a shift, and Back to selling without a shift returns to the till. To make everyone open one first, the owner switches on Cashiers open a shift before selling in the business’s Settings, on the Point of sale tab.
For gyms and studios
At a gym or studio the front desk opens a shift on the desk’s till before taking cash for passes, packs and membership payments, and the shop or bar cashier opens theirs on their own till. See Take a membership payment.
For clinics and health services
At a clinic’s billing desk bills are taken without a shift, and the desk says so: No shift open: bills are taken without one. Open your shift at the cashier to count your cash at the end. If you take cash, open one as on this page. See Bill a visit.

The till shows Open for someone
Link to this section: The till shows Open for someoneA till with a shift still open shows Open for and that person’s name, such as Open for Nancy Wangeci. A till has one shift open at a time, so you cannot choose it. Choose a free till, or ask them to close their shift or hand it over to you. While your shift is open, everyone else sees your till as Open for you.
If someone opens the till a moment before you tap, Kila does not open your shift and names them:
- Close a shift: count the drawer at the end of your shift.
- Hand over a shift: pass your till to the next cashier with the cash in it.
- How shifts and cash-ups work: what Kila expects in the drawer.
- Cashier: your day on the till.
- You have SH-… open on Till …. Close it before opening another.: your shift is still open on another till.
- SH-… was not counted: Kila closed a till left open after hours, and you count it as you open.
Next: sell, and move cash in or out of the drawer with a reason when you need to. At the end, close your shift.
