Hand over a shift

Pass your till to the next cashier with the cash still in the drawer. You count it, your shift closes with that count, and theirs opens with it as their float.

Who can do it
Cashier, Till supervisor and Branch manager
Find it
Sell, then Point of sale, or search point of sale in Kila
Time
5 minutes

When the next cashier takes over your till, the cash stays in the drawer. You count it once: your shift closes with that count, and the next cashier’s shift opens with the same amount as their float. They count it again before their first sale.

  1. Open the shift panel

At the top of the till, tap your shift number, or open the menu under your name and choose Shift and cash.

  2. Tap Hand over

It is at the foot of the shift panel, between Move cash and Close shift. Kila says: “Count the drawer. Your shift closes with this count and the next cashier starts with it as their float.”

  3. Choose who takes over

Under Hand over to, tap the next cashier. Everyone who can take over this till is listed, marked Free.

Hand over Till 1 (by the door) at Baraka Wines and Spirits: Agnes Chepkemoi is chosen (3). Kamau Ndegwa, Lilian Moraa and Wanjiku Ndegwa are free; Nancy Wangeci is On SH-000227 at Till 2 (tasting counter) and cannot be chosen.Hand over Till 1 (by the door) at Baraka Wines and Spirits: Agnes Chepkemoi is chosen (3). 4. Count the drawer

Type how many notes of each value are in the drawer, and the coins in shillings. Add a Note if the next cashier or a supervisor should know something.

Steps 4 to 6 on one screen.
The count: two KES 1,000 notes, one KES 500 note and one KES 50 note make KES 2,550.00 (4), with a note for the next cashier. The box I counted KES 2,550.00 in the drawer and hand it to Agnes Chepkemoi is ticked (5), and Hand over KES 2,550.00 is marked 6.The count: two KES 1,000 notes, one KES 500 note and one KES 50 note make KES 2,550.00 (4), with a note for the next cashier. Your count of the float is not what was handed over

Link to this section: Your count of the float is not what was handed over
Kila shows:

The counts differ

Your count is what you start with. The difference is recorded against the handover and a supervisor reviews it; nobody is blamed at the till.

Count the drawer again. If your figure stands, write What explains the difference: Accept float stays grey until you do.

Needs a manager

On the shift’s page in Sales › Shifts, a supervisor sees the Handover chain, such as “Till 1 (by the door) passed between 2 shifts.”, with each shift’s float and count, and the acknowledgements: Handed over by the outgoing cashier and the float accepted by the next.

Next: the next cashier sells on the till. You can open a shift on another till, or sign out.
