Record a milking

Type each cow's litres at the morning or evening milking. Milk from a cow in her withdrawal period is withheld, and the rest goes into stock as the milking herd's output.

Who can do it

After each milking, the herdsman records what every cow gave, on a phone in the parlour. Kila keeps the litres cow by cow, holds back the milk of any cow still in her withdrawal period after a treatment, and puts the rest into stock so it can be sold or sent to the milk bar.

  1. Open the Milk tab and tap Record a milking

Fields, herds and milk opens on the Milk tab for a herdsman: Milk today, the milk Withheld (withdrawal), and By milking. Tap Record a milking. Kila reminds you: “Milk from an animal in its withdrawal period is withheld, whatever is entered.”

  2. Choose the milking

Under Milking, choose Morning or Evening, and check the farm.

Steps 2 to 4 on one screen.
Record a milking at Kinangop Dairy Farm on a phone: the evening milking chosen (2), litres typed for each cow by ear tag, such as 8 litres for KDF-001 Wanjiru (3), and KDF-015 Tumaini marked withheld (4).Record a milking at Kinangop Dairy Farm on a phone: the evening milking chosen (2), litres typed for each cow by ear tag, such as 8 litres for KDF-001 Wanjiru (3), and KDF-015 Tumaini marked withheld (4).
  3. Type each cow's litres

Each cow is listed by her ear tag and name. Type her litres in the box next to her. Leave a cow empty if she was not milked, such as a dry cow.

  4. Check the withheld cows

A cow in her withdrawal period after the vet’s treatment is marked withheld. Type her litres all the same: Kila records them and keeps her milk out of stock.

  5. Leave the box ticked and tap Save

Put the saleable milk into stock now is ticked: the milking’s saleable milk goes into stock as you save. Tap Save. Kila says Milk recorded.

The end of the same list: Put the saleable milk into stock now, ticked, and Save (5).The end of the same list: Put the saleable milk into stock now, ticked, and Save (5).
  6. Read the Milk tab

By milking now shows the milking’s litres (in stock), and Withheld (withdrawal) includes the withheld cows. In the list, each withheld cow’s milk shows why, such as Withdrawal period until 2026-11-01.

The Milk tab after the evening milking: Milk today, the withheld milk, and By milking with the morning and the evening each in stock (6).The Milk tab after the evening milking: Milk today, the withheld milk, and By milking with the morning and the evening each in stock (6).

The saleable milk goes into stock as a production order on the milking herd, made and closed at once. The withheld milk goes down as its scrap, so the herd’s milk, its costs and what was thrown away stay together.

Kila shows:
The evening milk of 2026-10-30 is already in stock.

Each milking goes into stock once a day. Once it is in stock it cannot be recorded again, so check every cow’s litres before you save.

Good to know

A cow’s withdrawal period comes from a treatment recorded on the Animals tab: tap Record on the cow and choose Treatment. “Its withdrawal period applies (else milk 3 days, meat 28 days).” The cow then shows Milk to and Meat to the day each period ends.

Next: see what the herd and its milk cost: Follow a field or herd’s costs.
