Your role

Waiter

Your shift on Kila Floor, on your own phone. Seat guests, send their rounds, run the food and print the bill; the cashier takes the payment, and a floor supervisor clears you at the end.

As a waiter you work on your own phone in Kila Floor, with no till of your own. Kila describes the role: “Opens bills for customers on Kila Floor, adds rounds, prints the bill and sends an M-Pesa prompt at the table; hands their bills over at shift change; the cashier closes them. No discounts, voids or refunds.”

Kila opens Kila Floor: the outlet’s tables, your own bills and what the kitchen and the bar have ready for you. The first time you open it each day, Today’s briefing sits at the top (1): the manager’s notes, what is off today and what is running low, and the day’s bookings. Close it once you have read it.

Below it, guests calling from Terrace 4 and Terrace 8, Mine and Everyone, and the free tables Bar 1 to Bar 4.
  1. Read the briefing, then close it.
  2. Seat customers at a free table: see Seat guests at a table.
  3. Send each round to the kitchen and the bar, and fire the next course when the table is ready: see Send an order to the kitchen and bar and Hold and fire courses.
  4. Run the food when the kitchen and the bar have it ready: see Kila Floor, the waiter’s phone.
  5. Print the bill when the customers ask for it. The cashier takes the payment at the till.
  6. Before you go, open My shift at the top right. Settle or hand over any bill still open, and a floor supervisor clears you: see Close the night and check last night.

Tap a table, then Bill:

Bar 4's bill of KES 600 on Brian Kiprono's phone: Print the bill (1), M-Pesa prompt (2), Comp an item (ask) (3), the round sent with beef samosas and a fresh passion juice, and at the bottom To take an item off, ask a supervisor: they do it from the till with the reason. 1. Print the bill prints it for the customers: Kila says Bill printed.
  2. M-Pesa prompt opens M-Pesa at the table, such as “Bar 4 (Bill 120): KES 600.00 to pay. The guest enters their PIN on their own phone; the money is held on this bill.” Type the Guest’s phone, and the amount: “All of it, or one guest’s share.”
  3. Comp an item (ask) asks a manager to give an item on the house: see Give an item on the house.
  4. To take an item off, Kila says: “To take an item off, ask a supervisor: they do it from the till with the reason.”

Move table, Merge bills, Split by seat and Give to a waiter are on your own bills: see Split, move or merge a bill.

Where the business has not set up M-Pesa prompts, Kila says: “M-Pesa prompts are not set up for this business. Ask the customer to pay to the till or paybill, then enter the M-Pesa code.” Take the bill to the cashier instead: see Take M-Pesa. Until Kila’s M-Pesa connection is live (Integrations and API says Prompts not connected), Kila sends no prompt either and says “M-Pesa prompts are not connected to Safaricom yet”: take the bill to the cashier the same way.

  • Open bills at tables, and with New bill at the bottom, one that is not at a table.
  • Send rounds to the kitchen and the bar, and fire held courses.
  • Print the bill, and send an M-Pesa prompt to the guest’s phone.
  • Move, merge, split or give your own bills to another waiter.
  • Ask a manager for a comp.

Needs a manager

  • Taking an item off the bill. A supervisor does it from the till, with the reason.
  • A comp. Comp an item (ask) sends it to a manager: “A manager approves comps. Your request goes to their Approvals and phone.”
  • Another waiter’s bill. It has no Move table, Merge bills, Split by seat or Give to a waiter. The waiter whose bill it is gives it to you, or a floor supervisor does.
  • Going home. A floor supervisor clears you once nothing of yours is open.

While a bill of yours is open, My shift says so:

Kila shows:

1 bill still open (KES 600)

Settle or hand them over before you go; a supervisor then clears you.

Can I take the payment on my phone? Your bill has no Take payment: the cashier takes it at the till. Where the business sends M-Pesa prompts, M-Pesa prompt lets the customer pay from their own phone at the table.

How do I take an item off the bill? Ask a supervisor: they do it from the till with the reason. If the item is on the house, ask for a comp instead.

My shift is over and a table is still eating. Open its bill and tap Give to a waiter to give it to the waiter who takes over. A floor supervisor then clears you.
