The till works the same for the first sale as for every one after it: a shift on one till, the products, the payment. Here Amina sells a bar of soap and a soda for cash at Nuru General Store.

  1. Open the till

In your set-up checklist, the last step, First sale, says “Open a shift on the till and sell.” Tap Open the till. Any other day, open Sell › Point of sale.

  2. Choose your till and count the float

The till asks you to Open your shift: “Choose your till and count the float in the drawer. Every shilling from here is on your shift until you close it.” Tap your till, then type how many notes of each value are in the drawer and the coins. Amina has two KES 1,000 notes.

Open your shift: Till 1 chosen and two KES 1,000 notes counted (2), and the Open shift with KES 2,000.00 button (3).Open your shift: Till 1 chosen and two KES 1,000 notes counted (2), and the Open shift with KES 2,000.00 button (3).
  3. Tap Open shift with KES 2,000.00

Kila says the shift is open on your till: “Float KES 2,000.00. You can start selling.” The shift number shows in green at the top of the till.

  4. Add the products

Scan each barcode, or tap the product. A barcode scanner types into the search box at the top, Scan a barcode or search by name or SKU, without you clicking it first.

  5. Tap Charge

The button shows the total, such as Charge KES 320.00. Kila opens Take payment with the Amount due.

  6. Tap Cash, then the note the customer gives you

Kila offers Exact and the notes above the total, such as 500 and 1,000. Tap the one the customer hands over, or type it in Cash received and tap Take cash.

  7. Give the change

Kila shows Sale S-000001 complete and the Change to give in large figures, KES 180.00 from KES 500 here, with the receipt beside it. Print it with Print receipt, or send it with Send receipt.

Sale S-000001 complete: change to give KES 180.00 on a total of KES 320.00 (7), and the receipt, which says eTIMS test mode, not a valid fiscal receipt (7). New sale (8).Sale S-000001 complete: change to give KES 180.00 on a total of KES 320.00 (7), and the receipt, which says eTIMS test mode, not a valid fiscal receipt (7). New sale (8).
  8. Tap New sale

The cart is empty again for the next customer.

Not available yet

Kila is not connected to KRA yet, so the receipt says “eTIMS test mode - not a valid fiscal receipt”. Until the eTIMS test service confirms the sale, it also says: “Fiscal receipt pending. The eTIMS number and QR code print on the copy from Sales once eTIMS confirms it.” See Set up eTIMS and KRA item codes.

The first sale ticks off the last step. The checklist says your business is ready to trade: “Ready to trade. Every step done.” The Setup item leaves your menu.

Nuru General Store is ready to trade: Ready to trade. Every step done, with Go to the dashboard and Open the till, and every step marked Done.Nuru General Store is ready to trade: Ready to trade. Every step done, with Go to the dashboard and Open the till, and every step marked Done.

In Take payment, choose how the customer pays:

  • M-Pesa: the till shows the number to pay, such as Till 5123456: “Check the customer’s M-Pesa message: the amount, your business name and the time. Enter the code if you have it; without it, Kila gives the payment a reference (MP-…) for the receipt.” Type the code and tap Use code …; without one, tick I have seen the M-Pesa message for KES … and tap Record M-Pesa as received. See Take M-Pesa.
  • Card: “Charge the card on the card machine first. When it prints the slip, record it here.” Type the Amount on the slip, the Last four digits of the card and the Authorisation code, then tap Record card payment. See Take a card payment.
  • Bank transfer: type the Amount received and the Bank reference, then tap Take bank transfer. See Take a bank transfer.

A customer paying part one way and the rest another, such as cash and M-Pesa, is a Split payment: see Take more than one payment.

  • The till says “This device is not registered for selling.” An owner or manager approves the computer once: see Set up your till.
  • A search finds nothing. Kila says Nothing matches what you typed: “Check the spelling, scan the barcode, or search by SKU.”

Next: Run your first day: more sales, closing the shift and reading the day.
