Step by step
Charge interest on a fee note
When a client's fee notes stay unpaid past the firm's period, billing bills the interest due as a fee note of its own, from the client's collections page.
Kila works out the interest on each fee note unpaid after the firm’s period, day by day, and shows it on the client’s collections page. Billing and credit control bill it when they choose: Kila bills it as a fee note of its own, with a line for each fee note it is charged on.
Open Collections
Go to Fees and client money › Billing and tap Collections: “What clients owe by age, follow-ups, promises to pay and reminders.” Each client’s fee notes are spread by age: Not yet due, 1–30 days, 31–60, 61–90 and Over 90. Tap the client.
Check the interest due
The client’s page shows Owed on fee notes and, when there is some, Interest due with the firm’s terms, such as 14% a year after 30 days. Open fee notes says how late each one is, such as “due 2 Sept 2026, 58 days late”.
Tap Bill the interest
Kila bills the interest due as a fee note and says, for example, S-000080: interest of KES 2,116.83 billed.
Check the interest fee note
Under Fee notes, open it. Each line says what the interest is for, such as “Interest at 14% a year on S-000016 (KES 43450.00 unpaid), 58 days from 2026-09-02”. It goes through eTIMS like any fee note, and the client pays it like any other.
The law says
The firm’s setting names its source: “Interest on fee notes unpaid after the period (Advocates (Remuneration) Order, paragraph 7).” A partner sets the rate and the period under Practice configuration › Fees and billing; at Wanjiru & Otieno Advocates they are 14% a year after 30 days. Check them against the Order with the firm before relying on them.
There is no Bill the interest button
Link to this section: There is no Bill the interest buttonNo interest is due on the client’s fee notes yet: none is past the period, or today’s interest is already billed. Kila bills a client’s interest once a day, so the button comes back as the interest grows.
