Step by step
Enter and release lab results
Take the samples on the lab worklist, enter each result against its reference range, and release it to the clinician.
The tests a clinician orders land on the lab’s Worklist. The lab takes the samples, enters each result and releases it: only then does the clinician see it. Kila flags a value outside the patient’s reference range, and a critical value is released with a record of who was told.
Find the tests on the worklist
Lab opens on the Worklist: To collect, In progress, To check and release and Past turnaround at the top, then each test with the patient, the specimen, its status and how long it has waited against its turnaround. Emergencies come first. Tap a section, such as Chemistry, to see only its tests, and tick the tests whose samples you are taking.
Steps 1 and 2. Take the samples and print the labels
Tap Take 2 samples and print labels (or Take sample on one line). Kila gives each tube a sample number, says 2 samples taken. and prints the labels for a thermal label printer (50 × 25 mm). The status turns to Sample taken with the sample number.
Enter the result
Tap Enter result. The form shows each value with its Unit and the Reference range for this patient’s sex and age. Type the values, and a Comment if needed.
Steps 3 and 4. Save the result
Tap Save result. Kila says Result entered for HbA1c. and flags a value outside the range, such as High, for the clinician. The status turns to Result entered at the worklist’s next refresh, within 20 seconds.
Check and release
Check the result, then tap Check and release. Kila says HbA1c released to the practitioner. The clinician sees it under Results to see on My patients, and gets a notification, HbA1c has been released. Open the visit to read it., which names neither the patient nor the result.
A critical value
Link to this section: A critical valueA value past the test’s critical limit, such as a random blood sugar of 26.4 mmol/L, is marked Critical:
Tell the clinician at once. When you tap Check and release, Kila asks Release: critical Random blood sugar: Who was told (it starts with the patient’s clinician) and How (By phone, In person or By message). Tap Release and record: the time and your name are recorded with it, and the clinician sees the result marked Critical.
The test goes to a referral lab
Link to this section: The test goes to a referral labTap Send out on its line, name the Referral laboratory and when the Result expected. It stays under Sent out until its result is entered, and the worklist shows where it went and when it is due.
You are not caring for this patient
Link to this section: You are not caring for this patientThe lab reads the results of patients with a visit open at its branch. Once a visit is closed or cancelled, ask a clinician caring for the patient. See Clinical privacy.
Good to know
A lab technologist works the lab only: samples, results and their release. Kila refuses the rest of the visit: Your role works in the lab: samples, results and their release. The desk and the clinicians change the visit.
- See a patient: where the tests are ordered.
- Lab technologist: the lab’s day.
- Clinical privacy: who reads results.
Next: the clinician reads the results and finishes the consultation.
