Step by step
Triage a patient
Take the patient's vital signs, the reason for the visit and their allergies in one step, then send them to a clinician.
Triage is the first clinical look at a patient: their vital signs, why they came, what they are allergic to, and how urgent they are. The Triage screen does it in one step on a tablet or a computer, then sends the patient on to a clinician.
Choose the patient
Triage lists the patients waiting at your branch under Waiting, with their number, age and sex and how long they have waited. Tap a patient, or tap Next: and the name of the next one. Call shows their number on the waiting-room screen.
Type the vital signs
Fill in what you measured: Temperature (°C), Pulse (/min), Blood pressure (mmHg) as 120/80, Breathing (/min), SpO2 (%), Weight (kg), Height (cm), Pain (0-10) and Glucose (mmol/L), and the MUAC (cm) of a child under 5. As you type, Kila marks a reading outside the clinic’s ranges High or Low, and works out the BMI from the weight and height.
Steps 2 to 7 on one form. Write the reason for the visit
In Reason for the visit, in the patient’s words, such as “Fever and headache for 2 days”.
Check the allergies and long-term conditions
What the desk recorded shows in Allergies. Ask the patient, and correct it or add Long-term conditions. Both go on the patient’s file for every clinician who sees them.
Choose the priority
Emergency, Priority or Routine. Emergencies are called first, then the longest wait.
Choose who to send them to
In Send to: The next free clinician, The clinicians’ queue (anyone), or a clinician by name, with how many already wait for them.
Tap Save and send
Kila saves the triage and moves the patient on:
The patient is now in My patients for that clinician.
Emergency readings
Link to this section: Emergency readingsWhen a reading is past the clinic’s emergency limits, Kila says so as you type. Kila’s starting limits are an SpO2 below 90, a systolic blood pressure below 80 or above 180, a temperature above 40 °C and a pulse above 130.
The priority turns to Emergency. Check the reading, then Save and send: the patient is called before everyone else.
The patient is marked To pay first
Link to this section: The patient is marked To pay firstAt a branch where cash patients pay before each step (Embakasi, at Afya Bora), the list marks a patient who has not paid the consultation fee To pay first. They pay at the front desk or the billing desk before they see the clinician. Insured patients and emergencies are never held.
Good to know
Nursing tasks is the second tab: injections, dressings and other procedures a clinician orders for a patient. Tap Done when it is done. With none waiting it says No nursing tasks waiting.
Good to know
A nurse reads a patient’s triage and history (allergies and conditions) while they have a visit open at the branch, never the clinician’s notes or diagnoses. See Clinical privacy.
- Register a patient: before triage.
- Nurse: the nurse’s day.
Next: the clinician sees the patient.
