How it works

Your client portal

Sign in to follow your matters with your advocates. Court dates, what the firm needs from you, the documents it shares, its fee notes and a secure line to the firm.

A law firm that uses Kila can give you a sign-in to its client portal. There you follow your matters, answer what the firm asks of you, read the documents it shares, see its fee notes and write to the firm, in private, from your phone. If you act for a company or other organisation, you see its matters with the rights the firm has recorded for you.

The firm sends you an email, Your client portal with the firm’s name, with a Choose a password link. The link works for seven days. Choose your password there, then sign in at the firm’s address with your email and that password. To be sent a new link, or if you forget your password, contact the firm.

Good evening, Rachel, in the client portal of Wanjiru & Otieno Advocates: the tiles To do (1), New messages, To pay and Next in court, then Needs your action (2) and Your matters.Good evening, Rachel, in the client portal of Wanjiru & Otieno Advocates: the tiles To do (1), New messages, To pay and Next in court, then Needs your action (2) and Your matters.

Four tiles say what needs you: To do (1), New messages, To pay and Next in court. Needs your action (2) lists what the firm has asked of you; Your matters lists each matter with where it stands and its next date, and Latest updates, when there are any, what the firm has told you. The firm’s phone and email are at the bottom of the page.

What the firm asks of you, each with the day it is needed by, such as By 3 November 2026:

  • To approve: tap Read the document, then Approve, or Ask for changes, say in What should change what is wrong, and tap Send to the firm.
  • A question for you: type Your answer and tap Send the answer.
  • To sign: tap Read and sign, or for a document to print and sign, send back a scan or photo of the signed pages.
  • To pay: pay the fee note, then type the M-Pesa code or bank reference in Payment reference and tap I have paid.
  • Documents to send: send each document the firm lists.
To do: Approve the draft warrant of attachment, with the day it is needed, Read the document (1), Approve (2) and Ask for changes (3).To do: Approve the draft warrant of attachment, with the day it is needed, Read the document (1), Approve (2) and Ask for changes (3).
A question for you: Confirm the debtor's new address, with the answer typed in Your answer (4) and Send the answer (5).A question for you: Confirm the debtor's new address, with the answer typed in Your answer (4) and Send the answer (5).

Kila tells you each answer has reached the firm: “Answered. The firm has been told.” or “Changes asked for. The firm has been told.” It moves to Done, such as “Answered by Rachel Muthoni, 31 Oct, 01:31”.

Matters lists your matters. Open one for where it stands, its court dates, the firm’s updates, its documents, your conversations about it and your team at the firm, with their phone and email.

Documents has every document the firm shared with you, by matter, to Open or Save. Tap I have read it to tell the firm you have it. “Each time you open or save a document, the firm’s record notes it.” To send the firm a document, use Send us a document: “It goes to your file at the firm; you see it here too.”

Contracts has the contracts the firm keeps for you and shows you, such as an agency agreement. Each says who it is with, whether it is Signed, the dates it runs and whether it renews by itself, and under Coming up what falls due under it and by when. If the firm does not share its contracts on the portal, the page says so: ask the firm for a copy.

Fee notes: What you owe, with the account number (1), and the choice of Fee notes or Statement (2), above the list of fee notes.Fee notes: What you owe, with the account number (1), and the choice of Fee notes or Statement (2), above the list of fee notes.

What you owe is the total of the unpaid fee notes. Tap a fee note to see its lines, VAT, what is paid and what is left to pay. Statement shows each entry on your account with the firm. How to pay gives the firm’s bank and M-Pesa details: “Pay by bank transfer or M-Pesa, quoting the fee note number.” When you owe and the firm takes payments online, Pay by M-Pesa sends a prompt to your phone. Until Kila’s M-Pesa connection is live, it sends none and says “M-Pesa prompts are not connected to Safaricom yet”: pay as How to pay says.

A private line to the firm. The firm says how it answers, such as “We reply within one working day. For anything urgent, call the office.”

  1. Tap New message.
  2. Choose what it is About: one of your matters, or Something general.
  3. Type a Subject and your Message.
  4. Tap Send. Kila says “Sent. The firm has been told.” and opens the conversation.
New message: About, a matter chosen (1), the Subject (2), the Message (3) and Send (4).New message: About, a matter chosen (1), the Subject (2), the Message (3) and Send (4).

Your message says Sent, then Read by the firm once the firm has read it. The firm’s replies come into the same conversation: write back in the box at the bottom and tap Send.

Your name and the email you sign in with, and E-mail me when something new is waiting: “The e-mail only says that something is waiting here, never what it is.” Under You may, what the firm lets you see and do. Under How the firm writes to you, choose how the firm contacts you: pick one under Preferred, tick E-mail, SMS or WhatsApp, and tap Save. “To change what you may see, or to end your access, contact the firm.” SMS and WhatsApp from the firm do not reach your phone yet: Kila’s messaging for them is in test mode. Choose E-mail to be sure a message reaches you.

If the firm lets you ask for access for others at your organisation, People at your organisation lists who signs in for it.

  • To give someone access, tap Ask for someone. Fill in their Name and E-mail, tick what They may do and which Matters, and tap Ask the firm. “The firm checks their authority (for example a board resolution or a letter of authority) before inviting them.” Until then, they show as Asked for: the firm decides.
  • To end someone’s access, tap Remove beside their name, say Why and tap Remove their access. “They are signed out of the portal at once. The firm is told.”

Good to know

Only what the firm shares with you is in the portal. A document, fee note or message you cannot find has not been shared: ask the firm.
